Summertime Skating Safety! Why Protective Gear is Important

Children speed skatingSummertime is almost here, and that means lots of bored kids looking for summer fun! Roller skating is a great way to make the most of summer days, whether skating in the comfort of our indoor Tallahassee skating rink or heading out in the neighborhood with friends on skates, bikes, scooters, or skateboards. While zooming around on self-powered wheels is one of the great joys of childhood, it can also be dangerous. But don’t worry, we’ve compiled the basics on skating safety so your family can enjoy a safe, fun summer.

Simply put, helmets can save lives. If you or your child is skating outdoors, then a helmet is essential. Taking a fall on concrete, hitting a curb, or bumping into barriers at the skating rink are all hazards, and wearing a helmet while skating can protect your noggin and keep the fun rolling.

In addition to helmets, pads (including elbow and knee pads, as well as wrist braces) are also a good idea for beginner skaters. When learning to skate, pads can make the inevitable falls a lot less risky; they’re essential if you’re competing in speed skating, roller derby, or hockey. If you or your kids are going to be skating outdoors this summer, protective pads are even more important than when indoor skating.

If your child is learning to skate, then consider our Tallahassee skating lessons for beginners. We also offer advanced lessons and speed skating lessons. And don’t forget to check out our Tallahassee events for even more summer fun!

The End of the School Year is Coming! 3 Reasons to Celebrate with Skate World Center

The end of the school year is just around the corner! It’s time to pack up the backpacks and slip on your dancing shoes (or roller skates in our case). With all the hard work your family has put in over the past nine months, they deserve to celebrate by coming to Skate World Center for a fun time on the rink. Here’s why:

Good Grades? Great News!

Roller skating is the perfect reward for any honor roll student. Give your kid a pat on the back by bringing them in to learn how to roller skate or practice the skills they already possess. Positive reinforcement is the best way to ensure your child makes good grades again next school year!

Excellent Behavior Deserves an Excellent Surprise

Surprise your well-mannered kiddo with private skate lessons or summer skate camp for the whole season! Enroll your child in our private morning sessions or public afternoon sessions to help them enhance their skating abilities or make friends who enjoy roller skating as much as they do.

Simply Celebrate

Regardless of your student’s performance at school, they deserve a break and so do you! If you can’t think of any other reason, come skate because the end of the school year is just one more check off your list. Skating is the perfect opportunity for you and your family to let off some steam while enjoying each other’s company and celebrating another year down.

How To Make Your Next Party Stand Out!

two girls at at a roller skating rinkIf you’ve ever planned an event, you probably know the pressure that comes with organizing the perfect party. You want to make sure your party is unique, while also considering affordability and time. With this in mind, we’ve crafted a short list of party planning tips to help make sure you plan an awesome party.

Party Planning Tips Everyone Can Use

1. Everyone is one-of-a-kind; their theme should be too!

Do a quick Google search for themes that are fun and simple to carry out, but also that pertain the birthday person as an individual. Consider what makes the birthday person special or what they are really passionate about and roll with that.

2. On a budget? DIY!

If you find yourself strolling the party aisle and wondering why decorations cost so much, then this tip is for you! Hop on Pinterest and find some decorations that you can create yourself. This is something you can enlist your family and friends to help you with as well!

3. Plan ahead.

A week before your party or event is the worst time to start planning. It will cause you more stress than it’s worth (and ensure half your guests are busy), so make sure you start planning early on. This will minimize the pressure and give you time to organize the best event possible.

4. Skip all these steps, and let us take care of it!

Let us take some of the weight off your shoulders by booking a roller-skating birthday party at Skate World Center! Here at Skate World, you can choose from three birthday party packages, each of which will make for an exciting and fun-filled birthday for kids of any age. Each package provides your party with 3 hours of unrestricted access to the skating rink, game tokens, pizza, soda, 45 minutes in a private party room, and more!

Looking to Get In Shape? Try Skating!

tired workout - stretchingLiving healthy is something we all want to do but it’s also a lot easier said than done. A great way to add some healthy habits to your lifestyle is to incorporate fun activities that are good for you. Joining a sports team, taking a dance class or, our personal favorite, going skating, are all great options! Roller skating is a really great way to get and stay in shape.

Check out some of the health benefits and then swing by Skate World in Tallahassee, Florida, to get your exercise in after the big Thanksgiving feast.

  • Feel the burn – When you skate regularly, you might as well skip leg day at the gym! Roller skating can strengthen your leg muscles, including quads, hamstrings, hips, and calf muscles.
  • Strengthen your core – Roller skating works your core muscles better than almost any other recreational activity, making it a great way to get that six pack without doing boring crunches. You might not even notice it, but maintaining your balance requires you to flex and hold abdominal muscles that you might not normally engage, too.
  • Build your endurance – Tired of going nowhere fast on the treadmill? Come skate your heart out to get a fantastic cardio workout at the same time while your favorite music jams out and you have a great time with friends and family.

There are so many reasons to roller skate, but what better reason than your health? Check out our schedule and invite a friend to join you for an evening of skating fun that also happens to be a fitness routine.

Homeschool Skate Is Back!

Two girls doing homeworkGood news, Tallahassee homeschoolers: Homeschool Skate is BACK! We’re excited to share that this awesome homeschool event will resume every first Friday of the month from 1 pm to 4 pm.

Why Homeschool Activities Matter

There are plenty of stereotypes and misconceptions around homeschooling’s perceived social shortcomings. However, as any homeschool family can tell you, socialization is what you make of it, and many homeschool kids enjoy an extremely well-rounded social life thanks to lessons, clubs, sports, community organizations, churches, and local homeschool meetups for different age groups. These activities are so important, because kids do need to spend time with their peers in order to make friends and build the social skills that will take them into the adult world.

These connections can also help fill in the gaps; we all have areas where we’re more talented and other areas where we need some practice. Getting together regularly with other homeschool families exposes kids to other parent-teachers and homeschool students who may have some awesome tips, tricks, or skills that you’re missing!

What to Expect at Skate World Center’s Homeschool Skate

When you visit us for Homeschool Skate, your $6 admission lets you choose 2 of our fun activities for a customized experience. Choose from roller skating (including skate rental!), the playground for kids 10 and younger, or the arcade ($3 of tokens included). Skate the evening away to your favorite tunes and enjoy some fun and fellowship with friends!

Ready to have a blast with other homeschool families in Tallahassee? Invite your friends and be sure to share your Skate World photos on our Facebook page!

Roll Into the School Year With These Tips

close up shot of kid’s Chucks standing among school suppliesWith a new school year ahead of us, many families are figuring out how to adjust and get back into the swing of things. Fortunately, with a few tips you and your kids can roll into the new school year right and have a blast.

Plan Fundraisers Early

If you’re in charge of fundraising for the PTA, school sports teams, class trips, or any other school club or activity, the time to plan your next fundraiser is NOW! Don’t wait until the last minute to book your roller skating fundraiser; get it on the school calendar as soon as possible to ensure a good turn out from students and their families.

Stick to a Routine

Lazy summer days are fun, but that laid-back attitude won’t work as well during the school year. Regular bedtimes (for kids AND parents) can help keep everyone energized and in a good mood. Let kids know when they’re expected to do chores, homework, play, or go to after-school activities. Consider keeping a nice big calendar in the kitchen or mudroom so everyone can see what’s on the docket for the week. It’s also important to make time for fun, so schedule a weekly family fun night where the whole family enjoys an activity together. Skating at Skate World Center is a great option if you’re looking for affordable family activities in Tallahassee!

Keep the Fun Alive

Speaking of keeping the summer fun going year-round, it’s important that friendships don’t get pushed aside with the demands of school, sports, and other activities. Make sure your kids are getting the social interaction they need by scheduling a roller skating playdate! And remember, the Kids Skate Free program lasts all year, so your kids can skate their hearts out without hurting your wallet.

Ready for a fun school year? You bet! Contact us to learn more about our school fundraisers and field trips in Tallahassee.
